Telemark/Randonnee Courses & Clinics - Winter 2011

Mt Baker Telemark, Alpine & Randonnee Ski Camp

In its 16th year, the Mt Baker Ski Camp is a two-day instructional camp for Telemark and Randonnee/Alpine skiers. Advanced beginners through advanced Telemark/Randonnee/Alpine skiers are welcome. We have room for only 35 students, so sign up early. Overnight accommodations are available at the Mt Baker Lodge. Offsite lodging is also available. We offer two full days of lift-served lessons with Saturday evening video analysis. This year I have lined up six instructors, including, Shelley Hankanson, Greg Braun, Debbie Sumner-Chalfant, Stuart Craig, and Petra Hilleberg, with the possibility of Greg Dixon joining us from Bend, Oregon. Jerry White will be our man on the camera and Judy Sterry will be our lodge host. Send me your email address or address for a letter with a detailed description of the camp. NOTE: Lift tickets and lodging are extra. Contact Shannon about lodging. She has a few places available and can hook you up.

Course Information:

Dates: March 12-13, 2011, 9:00AM at Heather Meadows, Mt Baker Ski Area.sep
Prerequisites: Advanced beginner to advanced telemark and randonee/alpine skiers.
Required Equipment: Metal edge skis, plastic boots (recommended), with safety straps. Clothing appropriate for weather. Beacon (optional).
Fee: $185 for member, $200 for non-members; $10 cancellation fee. Fee covers the 2 days of lessons. Lift tickets and lodging are extra

Note:
Telemark/Randonnee/XCD events may require purchase of a ski area lift ticket. Some events may require a minimum enrollment run. Enrollments for Wed night Telemark/Randonnee lesssons and Mt. Baker telemark are open until cutoff date. Please follow links from Backcountry Ski Committee web site to individual course and clinic postings for details on policies and fees regarding cancellations, refunds, enrollment limits , cutoff dates and required equipment.

 

Multiweek Telemark/Randonnee Ski Course

The Telemark/Randonnee ski course is a multi-week program featuring multiple class sections at all levels of ability from beginning skiers with limited ski background through advanced skiers. The course emphasizes learning ski techinque, be it free-heel (Telemark) or fixed heel (Randonnee), to develop skills for having fun in the backcountry. Begining level sections focus on basic skills for maintaining balance over your skis while executing efficient turns. Advanced sections cover topics such as skiing of the steep and crud, jump turns, efficient skinning uphill, and entry into the fall-line.

The Telemark/Randonnee lessons are be taught by the PSIA-affiliated Summit Learning Center instructors in multiple sections graded by ability level.

Prerequisites: None.
Required Equipment: For Telemark skiers, single-camber metal-edge telemark, arerequired. Plastic boots are recommended.
For Randonnee skiers, use of downhill gear is OK. Students may want to rent randonnee skis with releaseable heels one week.
Fee: $165, Members; $180, Non-members. $10 Cancellation fee.
